We presently live in Clearwater Bay and have to move by the end of the year because our landlord will take his house back... :-(... Our budget is more than double of yours for CWB and Sai Kung for the same criterias and I must say it is quite difficult to find something 'nice' for $30,000. I don't know about Tin Hau, Happy Valley and Pok Fu Lam but over here, it is almost impossible to find something at your budget. I have some friends who pay $14,000 for a 700 sq feet with 2 bedrooms and a view, no roof. I hope you will find something interesting. If I find anything during my house hunting, I will get back to you. Good luck!

I am relocating to HK from the US in august and would like ideas of affordable nice places. We will stay on lantau island @ the headland hotel until we find residnece. My husband is working for Cathay and many of his coworkers are suggesting discovery bay. Where exactly is sai kung? Does anyone have any feedback on Discovery bay on lantau island?

Hi Jennhie in HK, I am thinking of moving from North Point to a village somewhere outside Sai Kung. My rent is going up 10-20% and my allowance down 20%. Can you let me know if you know of anywhere with a roof or garden included (you know what i mean) for that sort of price ($4000). I have a school at Po Lam and Choi Hung. Ta

Sai Kung is miles from the airport. I would imagine Discovery Bay or the Gold Coast. Don't really know that area though. If you are living in HK permanently and husband is flying then that is a different story and you need to find somewhere nice for you and accessable for the airport.

Chantal, my husband also works for Cathay and we live in Discovery Bay (D.B) however, after seven years here we are moving to Sai Kung in two weeks.
D.B. is a very soft landing into Hong Kong ( no pun intended!). It's full of expats from all over the world. This has it's good and bad points. Good because practically everyone speaks English and the grocery shop stocks heaps of international foods and products. This can be more important than it sounds as at the beginning
having something familiar to munch on really helps!
A bad point would be that it is very removed from real HK life and you could spend your entire time here not ever getting to know any locals, or experiencing the local culture.
D.B. is very clean and very, very safe. ( So was Truman's bubble, though!) It's great if you have kids.
We are leaving purely to try something new, seven year itch and all that.
Heaps and Heaps of CX staff live here, the airport bus stops at CX city ($28) and you will meet people easily. It's a cinch for your husband to get to work and back.
Sai Kung requires a car, but the rentals are cheaper. D.B. is going crazy at the moment.
The Gold Coast has a shuttle bus to CX City, but I've never lived there. So can't say much more about it.

Cathay runs a bus service from Sai Kung town - goes about every hour except right in the middle of the day - costs $24 (best bargain in HK beside the trams) and takes about 1 hour 30 minutes. have lived in Sai Kung for 11 years and love it - enough expats with loads of the local culture as well and you can get everything you need in Sai Kung - including loads of wildlife.
