My husband might be offered a 2 year position in Hong Kong. The numbers mentioned thus far were around $250,000 USD annually for salary, $80,000 USD annually for housing allowance, plus they would cover our stateside mortgage.
I've been looking over these forums to get housing prices, but thought I should probably just ask directly. What sort of housing options would that housing allowance give us? We're a family of three, with our son turning 5 soon.
Thanks!

Well a housing allowance of US$80000 works out to HK$52,000 a month. For that you can live in a decent flat in Central or live like a king elsewhere. It's your choice.
Your husband salary will work out a HK$162,500 per month, again more than enough to live live an extremely comfortable life.

Patrick, I don't think you read my reply very well which said people have a choice. I know someone who has 2 whole village houses joined together which gives them a total space of 4,200sq/ft + 1,400 sq/ft rooftop and huge garden with parking for 4 cars. This is costing them around HK$45,000 a month albeit in Sai Kung with a full seaview. This is why I said it's possible to live like a king elsewhere!
People do have choices, there are no real "expat" areas as such! There are areas all over HK that have a significant amount of expats, more of course HK side but more than you could imagine in the New Territories. Everyone has a different take on quality of life, for some it's having a real home for others it depends on how long it takes to get to the office.

I think Patrick has made a very good point and that is, Hong Kong is very expensive compared to what you can get in the US, Canada or Australia.
I have a friend who has a place in the New Terrritories. Her rent for a 3 level townhouse that is approximate 2600 sq. feet with a small patch of grass is $65,000. However, that is what she agreed to about 2 years ago. She will be negotiating a new lease next month and expects the price to be much much higher.
There is a chance that you might be able to get more space elsewhere, but you will probably find the place a "fixer upper". I seen quite a few places that have old bathrooms (ie..over 20 years old) that are renting out for a lot of money.
That's Hong Kong! It's a landlord's market right now.
CRL, make sure that there is space in a kindergarten BEFORE you decide on where to rent a place. Many school places are full with a very long waiting list.
See if your husband's company has any debentures or connections with the schools.
Good luck.
