We bought property in Sai Kung about 6 months ago. We have always had a small problem on the one wall of the house with rising damp. I've had the builders back to have a look and they don't seem very educated on fixing the problem.
Is there anyone in Hong Kong that maybe a specialist in this field? Is tiling the only solution to hide the damp markings?
Hope to hear from anyone who maybe of some help.
Best regards Richard.

Sorry to hijack the thread. We've just moved into a rented place in Sai Kung and I'm also worried about rising damp, especially as our baby is due in 8 weeks. There are no signs yet but I'm expecting it, seen as our place is an old style village house that has been freshly painted before our arrival. Is there anything we can do to combat the damp without spending much money?
Thanks

Hi Wayne, Is your wife's name Sarah? My wife (Marianne) might have met your wife at the Ma On shan clinic this week.
Anyway not much out there that can help with damp.... odd saying that this maybe a major problem on all village houses in Hong kong due to the fact they don't build their houses without a damp proofing layer. Advised by the local builders merchant: Remove the effected area, Coat with a fungicide (Sandtex), let dry for 24h. Then coat with a waterproofing latex (Kangaroo brand). Then re-plaster with a waterproofing plaster (flower). Then once all dry re-paint the area. Not sure this works yet as I've only achieved the fungicide part. Hopefully this will fix all the problems but I'm sure there must be more out there.
Hope this helps.

Hi Richard, yes my wife is Sarah, she enjoyed meeting your wife and looks forward to catching up for a chat.
Thanks for your reply, I'm not sure if I'll go through all that, fingers crossed that damp won't show, especially if I keep the dehumidifier on.
