canvas top over or below glass roof?

I had a glass pane roof over my terrace installed but have found that it is just to warm. Also 2 glass panes have cracked and need changing. I am wondering if there is a cooler alternative - like having a canvas installed over the glass top? Sounds silly but what about below it and rolled up like roman blinds when not in use. Really need some advice here. Anyone had something of this nature done?

what about mirrored film to reflect back the sun, applied on the underside....less obtrusive than a canvas shade (and better looking IMO)

Canvas shade seems hard to be cleaned and not durable! Not recommended IMO

larrym,

Oh dear, I think that was the original roof covering but did not good so I changed that for the glass pane only to discover that the glass roof now really very warm. What do I do now? Any way of having a cooler roof?

Normally the main reason of warm glass roof environment would be lack of ventilation. Try thinking about alter the structure say dismantle some pieces of glass and replaced by overlapped pcs. raising for couple inches to leave a gap for ventilation(similar to ancient slat roof).

The second concern may be heated by direct sunlight which shading method can improve. "funbobby" has state one of method above. Another more common method is to put plantation decoration for diffusing sunlight.

Thank you for your reply, larrym. Yes, the issue is heat from direct sunlight. I have direct sunlight hitting the glass roof and am unable to have plants since it is a roofing over my terrace. I am on the ground floor and having any structure higher on the roof will undoubtedly cause issues with my first floor neighbour. I guess we will need to follow 'funbobby''s suggestion but am wondering if it will actually reduce the heat generated by the sunlight? Also I am wondering if it will look 'nice'? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Mirror film can reduce part of heat but not much. I'm wonder whether it will cause annoyance to surrounding residents in term of visual effect especially higher level occupants around.

Plant can also be applied under the top or you can also consider to construct wooden grille under the glass for shading off half of sunlight.

it doesn't have to be mirrored film...it can be various degrees of tinted film as well...and it will definitely make the area under the canopy cooler to some degree, but remember that unless the entire terrace is enclosed and air conditioned, it will always be hot in summer or on sunny days...as mentioned, if you're not getting ventilation or breezes blowing through to dissipate the heat, you'll probably have minimal results...and the glass itself won't feel any cooler to touch...

here's some info from a quick google on the subject...make an informed decision

another alternative, subject to your building regulations, would be a pergola-type of structure (wooden) that would allow rain through, but cast shade when you want to sit outside, and allow heat to dissipate naturally

for example:

Thanks funhobby for the advice. Pergola type structure will not be possible as it would let the rain thorugh so I need some form of roofing hence the glass panes - I didn't realise it would retain so much heat with the direct sun hitting on it. I am looking into the solarfilm you suggested and am checking to see if it is available in HK and the cost - if it can be installed without too much cost like a roller shade (though it won't 'drop' vertically but rather horizontally) it will be very helpful. If it is too costly, then as I said may sound silly but a a normal window blind or romaon blind with heat reflective UV resisteant material that will roll horizontally might help if I can find someone to do it.

Any further advice or suggestion is very much appreciated!!!
