Hello! I have a specific vision to start a salon/spa business in Hong Kong in 3-5 years--and as its reputation builds, to then expand it into a cosmetology school and wellness center for women--offering services and classes in wellness (nutrition, stress management, health, etc). Would love to employ a life coach / counselor in the future as well. Though my main objective is to build a business, providing excellent services and jobs to the community's women is equally important to me.
I've done a lot of volunteer work in various countries including Hong Kong, and have grown a heart for serving women issues and needs. I want to use a business strategy to benefit women and their communities, rather than through non-profit/ humanitarian or other social service means.
Please let me know if there is any advice that you have for me! once again, I hope to start this in a few years. For now my game plan is:
- earn my MBA, and PERHAPS a cosmetology degree.
- continue building experience in business and salon/spa management
- build a small team of stylists and estheticians (2-3)
- fund raise and save!
Once there I plan to:
- obtain necessary visas and licenses to own a business
- purchase ideal location
- employ locals
- offer internships to locals AND US citizens who share similar vision as me.

Nice dream, but the Hong Kong spa/salon market is fully saturated and does not offer much growth prospects. Successful players have razor-thin margins, and most are actually losing money. If you do decide to go ahead with your idea, you should be able to find equipment for cheap though since many of the machines are being liquidated and auctioned off these days.
