If I get canned...

Question- I am suspecting that with the new budget coming up, they are going to disband the department I work for. Given my industry (I work in a niche business) and think new ops will be tough. My plan is to not bother looking for a new job for a few months, and perhaps travel, get fit, and brush up on a language with intensive lessons. Anyone else got plans for their forced 'gardening' leave?

My contract expires mid-August which gives me six months to look for another job. I'm not expecting a new contract to be offered to me nor do I want a new contract, to be honest. If I don't find another job here in Hong Kong that works for me, I plan to live cheaply for a while in the Philippines and go to the diving destinations in the Philippines that I have on my list. I will resurface in the U.S., which is home for me, find training in a field which I find stimulating even if it means less pay in the future. Hopefully things will be better in the U.S. in late 2010 and I can go back to work at that time. That means I have to live off off my savings for about a year. I will also have to be ready to pay for training for a new career.

Lots of great ideas emerged in my recentish thread on this site, 'Where to sit out the recession' - I don't know how to do a link to this but you'll find it with a quick search. Malaysia got the most votes but I still have a soft spot for Thailand.

I just left my employer here in HK after 5 years due to the financial problems around the globe. Companies seem to want to get out of the expat contracts that exist. I'm currently looking for work but y background is the insurance industry which is not real healthy right now in Asia.

Would like to stay in Asia for now rather than return to the US but HK is costly. Anyone know how long I can stay in HK with my current visa? I asume my employer is required to notify immigration I'm no longer employed.

Also thinking about the Philippines. Does anyone know if I can set up a consulting business there or Thailand in order to reside there? Thanks.

Lacord, I'm sorry to hear you've been let go. You can stay in Hong Kong until the date your current visa expires. Once it expires, if you have not found another job, you will have to leave HK. If you re-enter once you've left, you will be given a tourist visa. As you've been here for over 5 years, it would be a pity to leave now as you are close to the 7 years you are required in order to apply for your PR

I would take that with a pinch of salt, Cheesy. A lot can happen in a day/week/month and you may find yourself in the same boat before too long. If I were you I would take this as a 'signal' to find something else. Use the time to perhaps learn another industry, even plan a business with the aim to become self sufficient. Be the master of your own destiny.

I agree, I see this a delay. If the markets don't pick up, the writing is on the wall. The good news is that it buys some breathing space. Particularly as tax bills and others went out recently. They canned half my team on Friday after a massive cut last week in the company. It is very difficult to remain motivated at work when you feel you could get the 'HR' call at anytime.
