Enter HK on tourist visa and wait for work visa?

My partner is waiting for a sponsored work visa from the company he will work with here in Hong Kong.

Would it be best for him to wait in Australia until the visa comes through or could he come here on a tourist visa and then go to Macau for a day trip when the visa comes - I think that you have to leave HK then return to get the visa activated.

Has anyone had this experience and can share their advice?

Thanks

From what I know, you cannot enter HK on a tourist visa AND wait for a work visa. The work visa will be sent to your country of residence, this case being Australia. From there you can enter HK and stay as long as the visa restriction states.

i did exactly that...in fact i came here on a tourist visa, THEN applied for an Employment visa (not exactly legal, but many do it). If his company has already applied for the visa, it will be no problem to come ahead of time, get the visa here and then exit/re-enter (Macau/Shenzhen) for activation.
