I am an American who owns a Hong Kong company, with staff, but do not live here, just travel here every couple of months for brief business trips, and work from the USA. Does anyone know if I can apply for a HK ID card when I am in HK next, as it would make life much more convenient. Grateful for any input.

No you cannot unless you have a valid visa which gives you residency in HK.

As I invest in and support a staff of six people in Hong Kong though do you think I could apply for a residency visa ?

You will need to apply for an investment visa before you can get an HKID. It should be easy in your case since you already have an established business in HK.

but you could apply for a frequent traveller's card which would allow you to use the automated gates at the airport...
