Hi all,
I am wondering what is the difference between being employed on a work visa, vs. a dependent visa? Other than the fact that you can't change employer. I would like to know in terms of taxes, pensions, benefits, etc.?
Reason I am asking is that I am currently employed on a dependent visa as it was faster to get. Now I started working, I am thinking should I apply for my own work visa since employer is willing to sponsor it.
Thank you!

If the only consideration is work, the dependent visa is more flexible. You can change employers as often as you like, and take more than one job if you want. All with no requirement to obtain permission from IRD. Taxes and benefits are identical in either case. (as far as the law is concerned.)
The only advantage of getting your own work visa is that your condition to stay in HK will not depend on another person, and you can sponsor other family members as your own dependents if needed.
