No Mandarin no employment visa = no chance?

Dear all,

I have moved to Hong Kong around 8 weeks ago as my girl friend has accepted a job here. We both love Hong Kong, and it was our dream to come back after we both studied here for a year as exchange students.

I have worked for the corporate finance division of a Big4 company in Germany for around 1.5 years after studying international business, but so far have been unable to find anything in Hong Kong.

Any hints how to find a job in either corporate development, corporate finance, project management or controlling? I am a native German speaker, fluent in English with basic Mandarin skills (around 1000 words) and would need sponsorship for my employment visa.

Thanks a lot!

PS: JobsDB.com, Michael Page, Classified Post, etc --> I have tried it all, but no Mandarin + need for employment visa = 0 so far

Thank you very much, I will try my very best to be friendly and nice to all German/Austrian/Swiss people in Hong Kong :o) Unfortunately it seems to me that some would be interested in hiring, but not in sponsoring visas...

Any other advice from somebody else? I appreciate any opinion, no matter how crazy the idea might look like in the first place!

Marry your girlfriend. You will then acquire a dependant visa which allows you to work without anyone having to sponsor you for a visa.

Well, you did ask!

stefanhewitt, even you speak Mandarin, it is not easy to find a job here if you only have 1.5 years work experience. Having said that, the economy is improving and it seems more vacancies in the market now. Connection is crucial in job hunting. So talk to as many people as possible -Chamber of Commerce, Seminars, Oriented Happy Hour…

Many jobs are not filled through agents, think about companies that may have openings and call the key person in Corporate Finance directly.

And if your previous company has office in HK, how about asking them to transfer you here?

The website of the German Chamber of commerce has a job market section - get your CV up there. Register with the German Consulate (Deutschenliste), you can do that online, and sign up for their newsletter. Go to networking events - the other Chambers have them too, so does the Australien Association. Get name cards printed with your last job/position and your highest qualification on...

Get yourself out there...

Dear all,

thank you very much for your advice. I have already registered with the relevant Chamber of Commerces and try to be “active”. Indeed, I have managed to get some interviews recently so hopefully they will turn out to be successful.

Until I finally find something I am happy for any additional advice.

Thank you!
