I have lived in Hong Kong 5 years on a work visa. I recently (Feb.) lost my job. My visa is good until September of this year. My question is: someone told me I can stay in Hong Kong until my visa expires. Is this true? Also, they said if I leave Hong Kong for a trip and return prior to September there might be a problem with immigration. They may change my visa to a tourist visa. Is this true? I am concerned as I am looking for another employer in Hong Kong and would like to obtain a permanent residency in a couple of years. Any advice is appreciated.

if its working visa for 5 years oh well, u cant be a permanent visa even u find another job to complete 7 years, the only way to become a permanent visa here is to get married. In other hand i would like to mentioned to you that i have friends here who is working for 10 years but they cant be a permanent resident..only if u get married with a permanent resident of hongkong.

dougb, whatever you do push for the 7 years to obtain permanent residency. I made the mistake of leaving after 5 years during bad economic times and also I got fed up of HK and just wanted to get the hell out! Big mistake. I came back years later and I am paying the price...I'm a tourist and having difficulty securing a job. I don't want to leave HK. Get the residency and then you can do whatever you want later.

He can work after that with no restrictions.

evildeeds is right, however it's not automatic.
After the marriage, your new husband should apply for a dependent visa (with you as the "sponsor"). Once the dependent visa is approved then he can work without restrictions.
