Shifting from student visa to visitor visa- Advice?

My son's student visa expires soon, and he needs to stay in HK a bit longer. I believe he can go to Macau and re-enter as a visitor and so begin a 90-day visitor visa.

The question is timing. I assume he should leave right before his student visa expires (e.g. 28 Aug) and return after the visa expires (perhaps after midnight on 29 Aug). Is this the best way to avoid visa issues?

Any advice out there in expat land?
