Surely it is illegal for a 12 year old to work?

I know of two innovative kids who created their own part-time employment in HK. The one decided to be a party entertainer for young kids birthday parties. He made himself up to look like a clown and then put on a fantastic magic show. He was particularly good with young children which helped. Friends of the family in the surrounding neighbourhood supported his efforts at earning extra pocket money and as it was cheaper than hiring professional party entertainers, it turned out to be a winning situation for all concerned.

The other person was a girl. She decided to do a "paper route" and went around to all the neighbours asking them which paper they preferred and whether they would like it delivered for around 50c a paper I think. She ended up with quite a long list from the neighbours and would then pick up the respective papers and deliver them to the front door of her neighbours. Both these kdis were around 12 years old at the time. Not sure of the legalities in Hong Kong but whatever your son decides on, he could always advertise his services to your friends and neighbours. This way it keeps it small and personal and I doubt there would be any serious implications.

If you live in Shouson Hill, what will make your kid a good bit of cash and can be done during summer time or holidays and even weekends whilst at school, a car wash service.

There are a number of low rise complexes and even detached housing complexes in that neck of the woods, certainly close enough for a 12 year old to be able to get to if there are not enough cars in your own blocks. Owners of decent or even nice cars as they tend to be in Shouson Hill would probably pay 100 bucks a pop to have their cars done once a week, minimum 50 bucks in that area, but tending towards 100 I would think.

Worst case scenario he does 3 cars on a Saturday and Sunday, that is between 300-600 bucks a week and its not bad pocket money for someone that age. During the summer if he does more over the course of the week, its a nice little earner for a kid.

I don't think the bakery idea is a very pragmatic one, he'd have to get out to a factory probably in NT somewhere and it sounds far too much like child labour for any factory owner to really want to get involved.

Cara I have sent you a pm regarding your query.

Thanks Digital blonde ,he has done that before ,but feels a bit frustrated at not being able to do something that he loves , baking and desserts ,especially when he sees what goes on in bakeries or chocolate shops .I guess its worse because he can actually go into the kitchen and start from scratch making cookies ,cupcakes, cakes .

He also loves to paint and does make personalised posters for kids rooms etc .

Of course I as a mother do know and understand the legal complications of such things and have explained to him .But guess when you hear it again from strangers you understand it better .

Also the fun and excitement you get from making things from others is totally different from when you do it for family .

Thanks a lot all for your inputs ,much apprecaited

Thank you P mason for your idea and your kind words

He does canvas paintings sold some to friends and some on display in his room !!!

Dont have any clue what Chinese like to see in a handmade card , since I myself do greeting cards one of a kind exclusive ,no 2 alike ,but find the demand very very small ,though I am happy as cannot churn out too many anyway and of course want the cards to retain their exclusivity. .But just get the feeling that people in Hk prefer branded gifts more than handmade personalised gifts. maybe I am wrong ,but that is the general impression i get here.

Would love to hear from you if you have any ideas regarding what might be acceptable at Chinese New year , in terms of greeting cards ,which he could possibly accomplish in terms of easy.
