...and you don't need an Emp. Visa in addition to the Dep. Visa...and much more flexible since your employer need not sponsor you...

Dependent visa holders should be able to work anywhere at anytime (self employed or otherwise). A few years ago though, the government changed it. You still can work but needs "approval" from the government. Now, I don't know how the government enforces this. The safest thing to do I think is to ask the immigration department for "approval/permit". I don't know how much hassle this is, but I think it's prudent to check.

SPOUSAL VISA RULE SCRAPPED
Spouses of expatriate professionals and capital investors in Hong Kong will no longer be required to apply for separate work visas to take up employment from Monday, the government announced yesterday.
The department decided to lift the restrictions imposed in July 2003, to "enhance Hong Kong edge in attracting professionals and investors", an Immigration Department spokesman said.
Under the new policy, spouses of people admitted to live in the city for professional employment or capital investment can work without permission from the director of immigration.
While they will be still be subject to limitations on their length of stay, from Monday there will be no restrictions on taking up jobs.
Those on such visas may apply to the department for cancellation of the restriction. The restriction will automatically canceled when their current visas expire and when they are grated extensions of stay, the spokesman said.
However, spouses if those on study visas to Hong Kong will still have to seek independent work visas if they want to work.
Inquiries can be made with the Immigration Department at 2824 6111.
