Employment visa and redundancy

ORIGINAL POST

My employment visa is valid until February 2010 but I was laid off last month (and my employer has informed Immigration of this fact). What happens to my visa now - and I am presently continuing to stay in HK and seekingn out work): specifically, if I take a trip out of HK next month and return, can I expect the electronic gates to block me and firce me to re-enter on a tourist visa?

Thanks in advance ...

a-mann, GreenValley is correct, you can remain in HK until the expiration of your current visa. If you leave HKG before it expires, say for a short holiday and then return, you won't get a tourist visa; you will still be able to enter under your current employment visa even though you're no longer working. You're just not allowed to work for anyone else except without the permission of the Immigration Department.

Shoe Girl - thanks, but doesn't Green Valleys say the opposite: that if I enter and return before the expiry date in my passport, I return on a tourist not an employment visa? That is consistent with what Immigration counter staff said to me a couple of weeks ago. Anyway, I should find out soon enough, and it's not the end of the world regardless of the outcome.

Cheers

I can confirm what Shoe Girl says. Keep your ID Card and you ll see that you can enter and exit on it, until the date your visa was suppose to end. I know many people in this situation. YOu are not allowed to work though.

The rule may have been soften a bit as a lot of people will tell you that it happened to them a few years ago and their ID card was cut up as soon as they tried to exit HK.

Marathon (and Shoe Girl) - thanks again. That is what I had heard myself within the community, but it seems that from the counter staff you'll get the official reply ... no problems.

A-mann, sorry for the confusion. I said that Greenvalley was correct insofar as you could stay until your visa expired. But then I said that when you left HKG and returned that you would not be on a tourist visa. Like MarathonHK said, just use your ID card when you enter HKG and you will be okay.
