Under the Pyramid Schemes Prohibition Ordinance -

(1) A person who knowingly promotes a pyramid scheme commits an offence.
(2) A person who—

(a) participates in a pyramid scheme;
(b) knows or ought reasonably to know that any benefit that the person may get from participating in the scheme would be entirely or substantially derived from the introduction to the scheme of new participants; and
(c) induces or attempts to induce another person to participate in the scheme,
commits an offence.
(3) A person who commits an offence under subsection (1) or (2) is liable on conviction on indictment to a fine of $1000000 and to imprisonment for 7 years.

This arose from a news yesterday stating that pyramid scheme sales (especially. health products) has invaded the community of foreign domestic helpers .

Some of them have to stock up (using employers' place) the goods and even get loan for buying more stocks with the slime hope to acheive what dream the higher level sales projected. In other angle, the attention to the ones who need care and attention at home might be affected , especially the disabled, elderly, children....

Most of them finally get big loan but the stock can not be sold. And some of the products are just the medium for such pyramid scheme, such as "anti radioactive glass plates" (putting aura on nornal objects), and let the ignorance ones to buy it among their relationship network. Some of them face bbankruptcy as the company or the higher "line" disappered or change the game rules.

For employers, be aware of being abused for using your place to stock up as illegal business centre/storage.

For helpers, be aware of such activities may render yourselves in jail and the jaws of loan sharks with no realized goods in stocks.
