Do doctors in HK explain results and reports to patients?

I am wondering if it is normal for doctors in Hong Kong NOT to explain thoroughly the procedures, medication, side effects etc for each treatment. While my doctor is approachable, he does not volunteer a lot of information unless you have questions to ask him. But I'm not an expert in this area and often, do not even know the right questions to ask. As a result, I often leave the clinic confused and wondering ...

Also, are doctors obliged to go through each report with the patient? I've just been handed all my results including the pap smear, blood test, IVF Report - in an envelope by the nurse. No explanation whatsover.

Is this normal?

It is the obligation for the doctors to explain to you in details. I guess you have to ask the doctor specifically on your questions and doubts. The reports are very technical and should explain to you. Do not leave the clinic feeling confuse and wondering.

You should post the questions on the things you are confused with to the doctor. The doctor has to explain to you in details. If he could not, then his profession would be questioned.

It sounds very similar to the experience I have had with the HK health system.

You really need to sit there and ask questions - I make a list before I go in because otherwise I forget. If you sit there and keep asking, I find they have no hesitation to explain things.

Assuming you have another appointment, take your records in and mark all the points you need explained.
