Marriage overseas AND Hong Kong

Does anyone know if it's possible to get married overseas and also get married in HK?

If we get married oversease (Australia), does that mean that a wedding in HK has to be 'certificateless' because we are already married?

Has anyone done something like this before (dual wedding to satisfy the HK side and overseas side of the families)?

Thanks

As far as I know you can't actually get married twice (anyone correct me if I am wrong). Although, many people in your situation do have both a marriage ceremony and then a church blessing. A friend of mine recently got married in Asia and then had a church blessing ceremony and big reception back in the UK so that her friends and family didn't miss out on the 'big do' ... it was pretty much like a normal wedding but without a marriage certificate as they already had one!

Sapphire, is correct, you can have a certificate from somewhere else and then get a church do over here.

And I am saying this only because I have done this. Got married in the US and then came to Hong Kong and got married, to the same person, here. Only I made the mistake of getting a registered marriage here too because I had eloped (to the same person, of course) over there and didn't have the balls to tell my folks what I had done....long story!

When you apply for a marriage license here, one of the questions is "have you been married before". And if you say "Yes" well then you don't need a marriage license or cert here, you just need to prove you are married and the govt will take your respective documents as proof and likely put you in their records as already married.

If you say "no" (so as to do a registered do here) then you are essentially committing perjury and that carries a possible fine and possible time in jail. Of course, they may never find this out unless it comes to divorce time, you know...

In my case it was a simple matter of writing a letter explaining why I did what I did and then signing and dating it, the government loves keeping a dossier of letters explaining stuff, and they have a big fat one on me, no doubt!

So to answer your question, you can get registered somewhere else and then do a big church wedding here...or temple, or mosque, or you know what I mean...but you cant do a city hall number again over here if you have already gotten married somewhere else. The church thing is ok, just need to show that you already are "certified" married. Best check on the govt website about the nitty gritty details.

And if you are getting married, mazel tov!

I gst married in las Vegas and had the church blessing in Hong Kong! What worths to mention is getting married in HK is much cheaper. U can easily hire a wedding planner too and it's very affordable here as c/w las Vegas.
